Adopt a Hound / Mixed

Hound / Mixed Dog

Mike the Dog needs a home

Male, 2 years, 50 lbs

Approximate Age: 2

Approximate Weight/Size: Medium

I am an UNDERDOG because.... I am a hound mix! Hound breeds are very prominent in the rural south and usually the first to be euthanized at the shelter due to the overpopulation of this breed.

Location Saved From: Goldsboro, NC

Additional info:

Mike is an approximately 2 year old hound mix who came into the shelter as a stray. Mike is blind in one eye. He is shy and reserved, and the biggest pre-requisite for his forever home is that he must have a canine brother or sister.

He's very shy around people, but warms up after getting used to new environments. He is learning basic training commands and that will really be the key for him as he goes from a more shy dog to a more confident dog who is less wary about unknown circumstances.  Once he settles in to a new situation he is goofy and affectionate. He's a great pal for any adventure, even just laying around on the couch. Overall, he is a quiet, playful, and by-your-side companion. He is a great office dog and a great running partner! He would also be happy at doggy daycare or not - he just prefers to be with his person.

He doesn't seem to be bothered by wildlife, so no need to worry about Mike chasing after squirrels! He loves the water, but isn't a big swimmer. He can be self-motivated to play in the house, but isn't over-the-top. He refuses to be left out, so be prepared for a lovefest if you want to show your other dog affection. And he's very food-motivated so will be delighted to learn whatever you have to teach him.

Don't miss out on the very best second- (or third? fourth?) dog you can add to your pack!!  Whoever picks him to join their family will win the pup-lottery!

Mike tested HW Positive and has been treated for heartworms prior to arriving in DC - for more information on heartworms click here:  https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics

Foster Application: http://bit.ly/fosterapprdr

Adoption Process: In order to adopt, we require an adoption application. After you submit an application, if you pass the screening, we will contact you to schedule a phone interview. We will call your references, including your veterinarian and landlord (when appropriate). We will also conduct a home visit. After these steps are complete, you will be approved to adopt a dog. Please note this process takes 1-2 weeks so applications submitted when you are ready to bring a dog home within that time frame. You can meet our adoptable dogs at events, however, we cannot guarantee that dogs at events do not have pre-approved applicants meeting them there as well, so the application is the best way to start the process.

Mission Statement: Forever true to “The Underdog”, Rural Dog Rescue is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs in shelters who are often overlooked for adoption or rescue. We save the dogs who are at most risk of being euthanized: the hounds, the black dogs, the seniors, the sick and the broken.  We make a commitment to reserve a minimum of 50% of the dogs we save to The Underdog. Root For The Underdog!

Rural Dog Rescue's home base is in Washington, DC. We adopt to the Washington, DC metropolitan area to include Maryland and Northern Virginia.

We support several high kill shelters that euthanize in 72 hours and whose kill rate is 70% or higher in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina.  Rural Dog Rescue also helps dogs in need in Washington, DC and Maryland.

We are 100% volunteer and foster based and no salaries are paid.  100% of your donation and adoption fee goes to helping the dogs and cats of Rural Dog Rescue.

Although we try to be as accurate as possible, Rural Dog Rescue cannot guarantee the breed or full-grown adult size of any of the dogs or puppies in its care. Because many of these dogs were found as strays or are the result of irresponsible, unplanned breeding, we do not know the dog's exact background and can only list breed and size by our best educated guess. If exact breed and size are important to you, please consider adopting a dog from a specific breed rescue. Our goal is for our dogs to be adopted by people who will love and care for them forever for who they are - no matter what breed and size they turn out to be!

All dogs go to their new homes spayed or neutered, up to date on all shots, dewormed (although a second deworming may be required), started on heartworm and flea and tick preventative and sometimes microchipped.
